Anti-plagiarism and AI review

Antiplagiarism Review

"Entre Ciencia e Ingeniería" is a scientific journal focused on the dissemination of research articles in all areas of engineering, basic sciences, and the teaching of these areas. The journal publishes scientific and technological research articles, reflection articles, and review articles, written in English or Spanish.

The published articles are submitted to peer review by referees of recognized competence on the subject. "Entre Ciencia e Ingeniería" employs a double-blind review process, which means that both the reviewer's and the author's identities are concealed from each other during the entire review process. The journal's Editorial Committee establishes the protocol for reviewing the similarities and originality of articles submitted for publication in the journal. For the journal, it is essential to have original works; therefore, manuscripts with a percentage of plagiarism coincidence higher than 20% are not considered for publication.

Once the article is received through the journal's website, the Editor performs a preliminary review to verify that it meets the minimum requirements of the journal's topics and research rigor. After passing this initial filter, the anti-plagiarism review process continues, for review of similarity and originality of the article, according to the following protocol:

  • The article is passed through an anti-plagiarism platform. The platform used by the journal is Turnitin, which reviews similarity and the use of AI.
  • If the similarity score is below 20%, the article follows the editorial review process.
  • If the similarities exceed 20%, the Editor reviews the relevant fragments and determines their correspondence with the article. At the Editor's discretion, if the similarities are in the methodology and results, the article will be rejected. Otherwise, the Editor may request the author to make revisions and/or adjustments as appropriate. Once these changes have been made and verified, the article continues with the editorial process and is sent to disciplinary reviewers.
  • In all cases, the Editor will perform the pertinent review for the final decision to continue with the editorial process or reject the article.

AI Usage Review

The journal Entre Ciencia e Ingeniería follows the position statement of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technology in manuscript preparation. Tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Bing, as well as other large language models (LLMs), do not meet the criteria for authorship and therefore cannot be included as authors in manuscripts.

In situations where AI or AI-assisted tools have been used in the preparation of a manuscript, this should be adequately stated in sufficient detail at the time of submission through the cover letter (Letter of Originality). In addition, authors should be transparent about the use of these tools and disclose details of how the AI tool was utilized. It can be done in the "Materials and Methods" section, in addition to providing details about the AI tool product in the "Acknowledgements" section.

Authors are fully responsible for the originality, validity, and integrity of the content of their manuscript, including any material contributed by AI or AI-assisted tools. Authors must ensure, through careful review, that this content complies with all publication ethics policies of the Entre Ciencia e Ingeniería Journal.

In cases where the Turnitin platform detects a percentage of AI use in the review of the article, the Editor will evaluate the case and review whether its use was declared in the article and the originality letter, in order to determine whether the article can be sent for review or request adjustments by the authors, as appropriate, before sending it to reviewers. If the authors violate any of the ethical principles of the use of AI, the article will be rejected.
