Abstract

The following text contains two sections; in the first a passage is made about the origin and evolution of the clothing industry in the city of Pereira from the 1940´s to 1960´s in the twentieth century and its contribution to the development of the manufacturing activity in the region. In the second one, it studies the current development, the competitiveness and innovation conditions in the clothing sector in Risaralda until the forties, confection thrives as a crafting activity derived into an industrial one with the form of home manufacturing. Traders took advantage of the existence of a group of people trained in sewing, and the growing demand of urban population. In the seventies mass production consolidates and enterprises focus on the ability to generate significant scale economies, very low cost for basic materials, increasing technological advances for accessories and textiles, massive funding and expertise in complete package process. In the nineties, company's operate through enterprise networks oriented to external markets or a demanding internal market, since improves the institutional environment, its knowledge and its business relationships.
